Biallid House is situated in the heart of Clan Macpherson country, the area which was so beautifully evoked in the hit television series Monarch of the Glen. The oldest part of the house dates back to the mid fifteenth century, Biallid is the second oldest inhabited house in Badenoch. In all but 60 years of its history it has been a home to members of the Macpherson Clan. Records show that Biallid contributed some 29 men to the Macpherson Regiment in the 1745 uprising which culminated in the historic Battle of Culloden. Biallid House is still owned by the Macpherson family.
Biallid House nestles at the foot of the mighty hill, Craig Dhu, its importance in Clan history is underlined by the fact that the battle cry of the Clan is “Craig Dhu”. After the Battle of Culloden, Cluny of the ‘45 (the Clan Chief at the time) hid in a cave high on Craig Dhu to evade capture by the English and their allies. Cluny of the ‘45 was thought such a romantic character that Robert Louis Stevenson featured him in his famous novel of the period, Kidnapped.
